In retrospect we should have just re-skinned and re-titled this blog rather than spawning a whole new blog at MakerFarm. The content would be less fragmented, and we wouldn't have a dead blog sitting out there on the internet.

Atelier Van Lieshout's 'Votok Cabin'

Maybe I wouldn't want to live there, and it's only slightly more mobile than a shipping container, but as art, I support this.

Compost Queries

Hello all, in my ongoing experiments with indoor composting ( worms and dirt and plenty of oxygen, a little water ), I have finally come to a point where I have what might be usable soil.

But.

Compost is organic matter. The composting removes the fiber and starch and other things that are delicious to microbes and invertebrates. This leaves behind all the useful nutrients. But then, how can this possibly create soil bulk ? It seems as if compost is merely a way of enriching existing soil, as the inputs decompose into nothingness, rather than a viable means of creating soil. In order to build soil, I need other inputs : namely, sand and clay. Especially if I want to grow sand loving plants, like thyme, I'm going to need something other than this ultra-dark black richness coming out of my compost.

So, whats the best ( most sustainable ) way of making or gathering these other soil components ? It would fun if something like pulverizing glass bottles into sand was a viable solution, but I doubt it. I guess I'll just go ... find some sand somewhere ? buy some sand ?

Delicious Compost ?

This plant is growing from compost, manufactured 100% within my apartment with minimal smell. Fruit flies, however, remain a problem. Its also using used food containers to contain the soil, and the plants are pole beans taken cheaply from a bag of pinto beans from the grocery store.

‹‹MAKERFARM››

The folks at Dumpster=Home(collective) have redirected their efforts toward a new project : MakerFarm.

What will it be : a rural hackerspace ? model off-grid community ? place to prototype new farming methods ? a way to reach out the the community and inspire younger generations ? Perhaps : all of these and more. Stay tuned !

Fun fact : Fruit flies pass effortlessly through standard window screens.
